If you hear the tone clearly on both channels at a similar volume, your speakers are producing audible output. If you didn't hear the expected channel, check your device's audio balance settings and try again -- browser stereo routing may not always match the physical speaker locations on every device.

What Can a Speaker Test Tell You?

A speaker test can help you listen for:

  • whether audio is playing;
  • obvious left/right differences;
  • low or missing output;
  • distortion or crackling;
  • differences across test frequencies.

It cannot automatically diagnose why a problem exists.

1. Set a comfortable listening volume.

4. Test Right.
5. Compare what you hear.
6. Try the available low, mid and high test tones.
7. If necessary, compare with familiar music or speech.

Left and Right Speaker Test

The left/right test sends audio toward the selected stereo channel where the browser and device support stereo routing.

If Left and Right sound different, first consider the device itself. Phones, laptops and external speaker systems do not all use identical speaker layouts, and some hardware may route or process audio differently.

Do not automatically conclude that a speaker is broken based on a single browser test.

What Different Results May Mean

No sound: check device volume, mute state, Bluetooth/audio output selection and whether other audio plays.

One side quieter: repeat the test and check device/audio settings. Hardware layout may also make channels sound different.

Crackling/distortion: lower the volume and retest. Persistent distortion can have software or hardware causes.

Muffled: if the problem followed moisture exposure, try Water Eject. If visible debris is involved, consider Dust Cleaner.

Speaker Test vs. Speaker Cleaner

A Speaker Test checks what you can hear. A speaker cleaner creates sound intended to help with specific physical conditions around an opening, such as movable moisture or light debris.

Testing is often the better next step when you do not know whether cleaning helped.

Can this test diagnose a broken speaker?

No. It can help you hear whether output, balance or clarity seem off, but it cannot inspect the device or determine the physical cause of a problem.

Why does one side sound quieter?

Check your device's balance and accessibility audio settings first, since some route audio unevenly. If balance is centered and the difference persists, moisture, debris or hardware could be involved -- try Water Eject or Dust Cleaner, then re-test.

Why do I hear distortion during the test?

Distortion can come from debris vibrating against the speaker cone, a device volume that's too high for the speaker to handle cleanly, or a hardware issue. Lower the volume and retest before assuming a fault.
