What Is a Frequency Generator?

A frequency generator produces a repeating audio signal at a selected frequency.

Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz). A 100 Hz tone repeats 100 cycles per second; a 1,000 Hz tone repeats 1,000 cycles per second.

The frequency control changes the pitch of the generated tone. It does not measure the actual frequency response or condition of your speaker.

How to Use the Tone Generator

1. Lower your volume before starting.
2. Choose a frequency.
3. Select a waveform if needed.
4. Start the tone.
5. Adjust gradually.
6. Stop immediately if the sound becomes uncomfortable.

Waveforms

Sine: a smooth single-frequency waveform useful for straightforward tone testing.

Square: contains the fundamental frequency plus additional harmonics and sounds more buzzy.

Triangle: contains harmonics but generally sounds softer than a square wave.

Sawtooth: contains a broad harmonic series and has a bright, buzzy character.

No single waveform is universally "better" -- they suit different listening or testing purposes.

What Is a Frequency Sweep?

A frequency sweep changes gradually from one frequency to another.

It can be useful for listening for obvious changes, resonances, rattles or dropouts across a range.

A browser sweep is a listening tool. It is not calibrated laboratory measurement equipment.

What is Hz?

Hz (hertz) measures how many times a sound wave repeats per second. A higher Hz value is a higher-pitched tone; a lower value is a lower-pitched tone.

What frequency should I use to test a speaker?

There's no single correct frequency for every purpose. A sweep across the range can help you hear where output changes; a fixed tone like 440 Hz is a common general reference point.

Why can't I hear very low or very high frequencies?

Small phone and laptop speakers often can't reproduce the extremes of the range well, and human hearing itself varies by person and narrows with age, especially at the high end. Not everyone can hear the full 20 Hz-20 kHz range, and that's a normal hardware and hearing limitation, not a fault in the tool.
