How to Test Whether a Speaker Is Working

Before cleaning, replacing, or sending in a device for repair, it's worth spending two minutes confirming exactly what's wrong. Guessing wastes time; a simple tone test doesn't.

Step 1: Rule out settings first

Before testing hardware, check your device's audio balance setting (sometimes under Accessibility or Sound settings) to make sure it isn't set toward one side. A skewed balance setting produces the exact same symptom as a broken speaker.

Step 2: Run a reference tone test

This is more reliable than testing with music or a video, because a single steady tone makes it obvious whether output is missing, quiet, or distorted -- there's no melody or mix to distract you.

Step 3: Interpret the result

  • Clear tone on both sides, similar volume: your speakers are functioning. Any remaining "muffled" feeling is likely about clarity (dust, moisture) rather than a broken speaker.
  • One side silent or much quieter: with balance confirmed centered, this points to a problem specific to that speaker -- moisture, debris, or damage.
  • Crackling or distortion on one or both sides: often debris vibrating against the cone, or the driver being pushed past a volume it can handle cleanly.

Step 4: Test across the frequency range

A single tone confirms basic function but not full range. Use the Frequency Generator to sweep from low to high frequencies and listen for a frequency where sound suddenly drops out or distorts -- that can point to a specific damaged area of the speaker rather than a total failure.

Step 5: Decide your next step

If testing points to debris or moisture, use Dust Cleaner or Water Eject and re-test. If a channel is completely silent even after cleaning, or the fault appeared after a drop or serious water exposure, that channel likely has hardware damage that needs professional attention.
