Speaker grilles are delicate -- the mesh is thin, and the cone underneath can be damaged by the wrong cleaning method. Here's what's actually safe.
Safe methods
- Soft, dry brush: a clean, soft-bristled brush (a new, unused makeup brush works well) can gently loosen visible dust from the grille surface without pushing it further in.
- Sound-based cleaning: our Dust Cleaner tool plays a sweeping tone that vibrates loose debris so it can fall or be brushed away, without any physical contact with the grille at all.
- Low-pressure air from a distance: a gentle puff from a bulb-style blower, held a few centimeters away, can dislodge loose dust -- but see the warning on compressed air below.
What to avoid
- Compressed air cans held too close or at full pressure -- can push debris further into the speaker or even damage the cone with a sudden pressure blast. If you use compressed air at all, keep it at a distance and use short bursts.
- Water, alcohol, or any liquid cleaner -- speakers are not designed to be cleaned with liquid, even "just a little." Liquid can sit in the mesh and cause the exact muffled-sound problem you're trying to avoid.
- Toothpicks, pins, or other sharp objects -- picking at the grille can tear the mesh or puncture the cone directly beneath it.
- Adhesive tape or putty "cleaning" methods -- pressing sticky material onto a grille to "lift out" dust risks leaving residue that's harder to remove than the original dust.
A safe routine
- Start with the sound-based Dust Cleaner tool -- it's non-contact and won't ever physically damage the grille.
- Follow up with a soft dry brush to remove anything visibly loosened.

- Only consider compressed air, used carefully from a distance, if sound and brushing haven't fully resolved it.
Prevention
Keeping a phone out of pockets with loose lint-producing fabric, and avoiding setting devices face-down on sandy or dusty surfaces, reduces how often this cleaning is needed in the first place.
